CASE STUDY
JB HI-FI approached ActReal to produce a series of short instructional films that clearly demonstrate their internal process for leaders managing mental health conversations with staff.
JB HI FI maintains the highest standards of
mental health support of their people and, as such, planned to utilise these demonstration scenes to augment their F2F mental health awareness and management training.

Realism was crucial
Again, it was critical to the project that the scenes were very realistic. The learning team wanted to ensure the subject matter was treated with respect, and that the learners could see the model used in a realistic situation.
Warning: contains references to mental ill health & distress.
A High Standard
Set The Scene
It was important to begin with a small establishing scene that briefly introduces the scenario while clearly showing a manager noticing a change in a staff member's capacity to deal with stress.
Next, it is critical to show both effective and ineffective versions of the following conversation.
Ineffective Conversation
Effective Conversation
Demonstrating ineffective conversations allows a learner to reflect on their
own ineffective behaviours and
their causes. A facilitator may
want to use the videos to
prompt impactful
discussion, as was
the case here.
Reflection
Ownership
Demonstrating effective conversations places the learning content into a
real world, conversational context.
This allows the learner to envisage themselves
implementing the
featured model
in their own way.
“The video scenarios were definitely the highlight, and they tie all of the material together well to make their point. Their conversations felt authentic and moving.”
